"They ignored repeated warnings": Sunak comments on UK and US strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen

Sunak commented on the UK and US strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen

It is because of the Houthis' lack of response to repeated warnings and blocking of shipping in the Red Sea that the UK and the US have struck at their facilities in Yemen. In addition, the Houthis have repeatedly ignored UN statements about the need to end hostilities.

This was stated by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at a joint briefing with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It took place on Friday, January 12.

"The UK-U.S. alliance has carried out strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, from which they launched drones and missiles at merchant ships in the Red Sea," Sunak said.

According to the British Prime Minister, even after repeated warnings about the need to stop these attacks, after the UN's statement on the need to preserve freedom of navigation and stop these hostilities, the Houthis did not stop their actions. And, according to Rishi Sunak, that is why today Britain, in particular, has taken limited steps to defend itself in the face of this aggression.

"Together with our allies, I have decided to take necessary, proportionate, and targeted action against military targets to weaken and undermine the Houthis' capabilities. We will not hesitate to protect lives and ensure the safety of commercial shipping," Sunak emphasized.

According to him, the United Kingdom will always uphold the rule of law.

"We must send a strong message that this is a violation of international law and it is wrong. People cannot act with impunity. And that is why, together with our allies, we have decided to take these measures," the British Prime Minister summarized.
