"The border has long been broken": Biden reacted to the crisis in Texas and called on Congress to take action

Against the backdrop of the US migration crisis and the confrontation between federal and state authorities, led by Texas, President Joe Biden said that the country's border "was broken a long time ago" and "it's time to fix it." He stated that his team had been negotiating with a bipartisan group of senators for two months to resolve the border crisis and assured that if the proposals were approved, the United States would receive "the toughest and fairest set of border security reforms" ever implemented in the country.

Biden also appealed to Congress, calling for the adoption of the draft law if congressmen really want to solve the problem. Biden's address was published on the White House website.

The US President emphasized that the problem at the US border has existed for a long time.

"For too long, we have all known that the border has been breached. It is high time to fix it. That's why two months ago, I directed my team to begin negotiations with a bipartisan group of senators to seriously and finally address the border crisis. That's what they have been doing for several weeks. We are working around the clock, on holidays and weekends," the Head of State emphasized.

He also noted that the proposals developed by the working group could help remedy the situation.

"What has been agreed upon, if adopted into law, will be the toughest and fairest set of reforms to ensure border security that has ever been carried out in our country. It would give me, as president, new emergency powers to close the border when it becomes congested. And if I were given this authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill," Biden said.

The US President also reminded that since October, Congress has not approved funding for border security at his request. These funds were planned to be used, in particular, for 1,300 additional patrol officers to control the border, 375 immigration judges, 1,600 asylum officers, and more than 100 advanced inspection vehicles to help detect and stop fentanyl on the country's southwestern border.

"Securing the border through these negotiations is a victory for America. For anyone who wants stronger border controls, this is the way to go. If you are serious about the border crisis, pass a bipartisan bill, and I will sign it," Biden addressed Congress.

Earlier it became known that the Texas authorities staged a demarche over the "wall" on the border. They officially refused to comply with the White House's demands to remove the barbed wire wall that was being built along the border with Mexico.

Governor Greg Abbott declared Texas' constitutional right to self-defense and assured that Texas "will not comply." At the same time, he was supported by 24 Republican governors who issued a joint statement.

In addition, Texas has mobilized the National Guard and military personnel at the US-Mexico border, where there have already been clashes with migrants. Local security forces do not allow federal border guards to enter the border.
