NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned China against supporting Russia's military actions in Ukraine if it wants positive relations with the West in a rather harsh manner. He emphasized that it is China that is currently "fueling the largest armed conflict in Europe."

Beijing's assistance to Moscow is important for sustaining Russia's military aspirations, Stoltenberg said. China's provision of highly innovative technologies, such as semiconductors, is "vital for Russia's military production," the NATO Secretary-General said.

"China says it wants good relations with the West. At the same time, it is Beijing that continues to fuel the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II. These are mutually contradictory aspirations," Stoltenberg said.

The NATO chief also aptly characterized modern Russia.

"The past is now loudly echoing in the present of the Russian Federation. Thoughts are controlled, freedom is restricted, opposition is suppressed. And as Russia becomes more and more oppressive at home, it has become more aggressive abroad, waging a full-scale war in Ukraine," Stoltenberg said.

While warning Beijing against relations with Moscow, the NATO Secretary General also warned Western countries against dependence on China. Stoltenberg drew parallels with Russian energy resources.

"In the past, Europe made a mistake by becoming dependent on Russian oil and gas. We must not repeat this mistake with China. Dependence on its money, its raw materials, its technology makes us vulnerable," Stoltenberg warned.

As reported, China provided a berth for the Russian cargo ship Angara, which is under US sanctions and is involved in the supply of weapons to North Korea to Russia. This situation caused outrage in the US State Department and led to a call for the implementation of a UN resolution restricting trade with North Korea.
