Local communists attacked a rally of Ukrainian diaspora in Greece on Holodomor anniversary

On Saturday, November 23, the Ukrainian community staged a rally in the Greek city of Mandra (a suburb of Athens) to commemorate Holodomor victims. However, local communists attacked its participants, including women and children.

This was reported on the official website of the Ukrainian diaspora in Greece. "During the event, a group of activists acted provocatively, using flags and symbols of the Communist Party of Greece," the statement reads.

Local organizations of the Communist Party of Greece and the Communist Youth of Greece are behind the attack. They claim that their actions were an "anti-war and anti-imperialist intervention" in response to "an attempt to falsify history and promote anti-communism." The communists cynically claimed that the peoples of Russia and Ukraine allegedly lived peacefully during the Soviet era, having overthrown capitalism. This statement was immediately picked up by Russian propaganda media.

The attackers blocked access to the Shevchenko monument, shouted insults, threats and resorted to aggressive actions. A diplomat of the Ukrainian embassy was injured during the conflict.

"An atmosphere of fear and chaos prevailed where there is space for the prayer only," a Ukrainian priest said, commenting on the incident.

The official website of the Ukrainian Embassy in Greece published a statement demanding an investigation into the attack on the rally held by Ukrainians in the city of Mandra. They also confirmed that a Ukrainian diplomat present at the event was injured by the attackers.

The embassy shamed the "aggressive actions and provocations against the participants of the Ukrainian community," noting that the attackers were members of the Greek Communist Party.

"We call on the Greek public order authorities to immediately investigate the incident and hold people accountable. It is necessary to ensure the rights of people and communities who commemorate historical tragedies so that they are not afraid of bullying or violence," the statement reads.

It is worth noting that despite the significant efforts of the Ukrainian community, Greece has not yet recognized the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people. This is due to the long-term influence of powerful Russian propaganda.

As reported, thousands of Kyiv residents came to the monument to the Girl with Ears of Grain in the city center on Saturday, November 23, to light candles and lay flowers. In this way, the capital honored the memory of millions of people who became victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 and the mass man-made famines of 1921-1923 and 1946-1947.
