Several countries in Central and Eastern Europe were hit by heavy rains that led to flooding. The cyclone hit the Czech Republic, Austria, and Poland, among others. As a result of the bad weather, at least 1,600 people were evacuated.

In addition, hundreds of thousands of households lost power, trees fell, power lines were destroyed, and there were significant disruptions in railroad traffic. Reuters reported on the aftermath of the storm.

Austria

The rains began on Thursday, September 12. By the morning of September 15, there was an extreme amount of precipitation, which was 2-4 times higher than the average September norm. The territory of the federal state of Lower Austria was declared a natural disaster area. The population was evacuated.

In the Waldfirtel area, a large increase in the water level in the river is recorded. At least one rescuer was killed.

Forecasters warn of a "rapid and significant increase in water levels in all reservoirs" and stormy wind gusts. A significant increase in the water level in the Danube is also recorded – at a level that has not been seen in the last 20-30 years.

In Vienna, trees fell due to strong winds, streets were flooded, and there were power outages.

Prolonged rains led to the breach of two dams in Lower Austria. Large amounts of water flooded several settlements, including a penitentiary, the Austrian public broadcaster ORF reported.

"Entire settlements are under water. In the city of Gollersdorf, a prison was also damaged. According to emergency services, the first dams have burst, including in Gadersdorf and Pottenbrunn. The population is being evacuated, and in some places, help is only possible from the air," the statement said.

In total, about 10 thousand emergency workers are involved in rescue operations in Lower Austria. They have to get people off the roofs, pump out water from houses, and clear roads blocked by trees.

Czech Republic

More than 250,000 households in the country were left without electricity. Many trees have fallen, cutting power lines and high voltage lines. Forecasters predict rain until Monday.

Significant disruptions are observed in railroad traffic. About 40 railroad lines had to be completely closed. Numerous Eurocity train trips to Poland and Slovakia have been canceled.

Poland

At least one person drowned and 1,600 people were evacuated in the Klodz County. About 17 thousand households in the county were left without electricity, and in some places, mobile communication disappeared. Access to some towns is completely cut off.

The city of Klodzko with a population of 25 thousand people is partially under water. The population of Gluсholazy in Opole Voivodeship has been partially evacuated.

In the town of Strona Śląska, a dam burst and the water level rose significantly. People are being evacuated by helicopters.

Cyclone Boris also killed at least 5 people in Romania.
