"They will be used in the coming weeks": U.S. confirms Iran's delivery of ballistic missiles to Russia
U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has confirmed that Iran has transferred ballistic missiles to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine. In this regard, the United States plans to impose new sanctions against Iran.
As reported by The Washington Post on September 10, Blinken noted that new sanctions will be announced soon, and will affect, in particular, Iran's state-owned airline Iran Air.
"We have warned Tehran publicly, we have warned Tehran privately, that this move would be a dangerous escalation," Blinken said.
Earlier, Iranian officials denied sending weapons to Russia. At the same time, the US Secretary of State emphasized that Russia has already received these missiles from Iran and is likely to use them in the next few weeks.
The delivery of Iranian weapons significantly strengthens Moscow's arsenal at a critical moment in its war against Ukraine, when Kyiv continues its counteroffensive but faces difficulties in the east.
In response to Ukraine's calls for increased military assistance from the United States, Blinken said he plans to visit Kyiv for consultations with its leadership.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Qanaani said that Tehran had never been a part of the Russian-Ukrainian war and the country supports a political settlement. The diplomat continued that the accusations of transferring Iranian ballistic missiles to Russia are "groundless."
As reported by OBOZ.UA, the White House said it was "alarmed" by the strengthening of cooperation between Iran and Russia in the field of arms. According to US National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett, Iran's transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia will mark a sharp escalation of the war.
As a reminder, Russia has already received the first batch of short-range ballistic missiles from Iran. According to preliminary data, the Iranian regime could have transferred more than 200 ballistic missiles to the Russians.
