"There will be no second Chornobyl": scientist talks about possible consequences of the ZNPP explosion Video.

In the event of a possible explosion of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant by the Russian occupiers, there will be no "second Chernobyl". ChNPP and ZNPP have completely different types of reactors, and the fuel in the latter is in a cold state.

This is how Volodymyr Borysenko, Head of the Nuclear Energy Department of the Nuclear Power Plant Safety Institute, explained the situation in an interview with the We Are Ukraine TV channel. He stressed that the possibility of a catastrophe cannot be ruled out, but its scale will be much smaller than at Chornobyl (to watch the video, scroll to the end of the news).

"At ZNPP, the fuel is in a cold state, and the diffusion of radioactive substances depends on temperature. The fuel is 'cold' - the diffusion coefficients are small, and the release of fission products into the environment will not be so significant," explained Borysenko.

To recap: On 14 June, Russia launched a disinformation and manipulation campaign aimed at intimidating Ukrainians. Russian Telegram channels began to spread a video hinting at a possible terrorist attack at the Zaporizhzhia NPP in the future. In the video, the propagandists hinted that they could blow up the nuclear facility, which they had managed to turn into their base.

The Centre for Countering Disinformation explained that by spreading this video, the enemy pursues two goals at once: to intimidate our citizens and to blame Ukraine for the alleged terrorist attack.

- On 15 June, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi visited the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP. Following the visit, he said that the situation at the plant was serious, but the water level was sufficient for cooling;

- in May, it was reported that the Russian occupiers were preparing a provocation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Enerhodar. The invaders may soon simulate an attack on a nuclear power plant under the Ukrainian flag.
