"There are no foreign bases": Borrell explains why US or other allies will not shoot down Russian missiles over Ukraine

It is incorrect to compare the war in Ukraine to the conflict between Israel and Iran and the intervention of the allies. The fact that Israel's airspace was blocked by the US and other allies after the Iranian attack is due to the presence of US military bases in the region.

This is how the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, explained the situation. He noted that he is aware of attacks on partners from Ukraine, which is also being bombed and shelled. Moreover, Borrell would do the same if he were the Ukrainian president.

"If I were President Zelenskyy, I would certainly also take the opportunity to mention that Ukraine is also being bombed and perhaps more effectively. Only two days ago, Russia destroyed a crucial power plant that supplied electricity to Kyiv, and Ukraine was unable to prevent this due to a lack of ammunition," Borrell said.

But there are things that cannot be compared, he noted.

"Israel has an 'iron umbrella', a steel dome that protects its airspace. It took many years to build and is very expensive. Even if the EU had money in the bank, it would still not be possible to build such a dome (over Ukraine) overnight," Borrell said.

"Secondly, Iran's strikes took place over the air bases of the armies of France, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Jordan, meaning that the allies acted in self-defense. This cannot happen in Ukraine. There are no air bases of the UK or the US, let alone Jordan, on Ukrainian territory or on the territory over which Russian missiles are flying," the European diplomat said.

However, Borrell noted that "of course, the supply of air defense systems to Ukraine should be accelerated and strengthened."

"I hope that on Monday we will be able to put concrete decisions on the table by the member states that can do it. We have been working all week to get these decisions," Borrell said. He emphasized that it was about anti-aircraft and air defense ammunition, not about the need for 155 mm shells for ground artillery.

As reported, on April 12 and 13, Iran attacked Israel from its territory, launching hundreds of missiles and attack drones in total. Both countries and their immediate neighbors closed their airspace.

Many of the missiles and drones were shot down by Israel's allies.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his country had been preparing for the possibility of a direct attack by Iran in recent years and especially in recent weeks. Therefore, all systems were deployed in advance.
