"The situation may change": Sullivan makes new statement on Ukraine's strikes deep into Russia

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan could not give a specific answer to the question of whether the United States would allow Ukraine to use American weapons for deeper strikes on Russian territory. The conditions may change depending on the situation.

He said this at a conference at the Aspen Institute on July 19. Sullivan noted that this issue had already been discussed with the president at a press conference after the NATO summit.

The US president emphasized that Washington is constantly reviewing its policy in line with changes in the war and Ukraine's needs. This means that the conditions for the use of American weapons may change depending on the situation.

"This question was asked to the president at a press conference after the NATO summit, and he essentially said that we are closely following the situation - what Ukraine needs, what we can offer - and make our judgments accordingly. And as the war in Ukraine changes, our support changes, the opportunities we provide evolve, and the parameters we set for them change. So I cannot give a definite answer to this question about the future," he said.

He also recalled that President Biden has already adjusted the policy on the use of weapons, allowing Ukraine to strike Russian territory in certain cases when Russia intensified its actions near Kharkiv.

Sullivan emphasized that the United States is an important partner for Ukraine, but he could not predict how the new administration's policies will change. He expressed confidence that the transition of the coordination of military support to NATO will ensure the stability of assistance to Ukraine despite political changes in Washington.

"I cannot predict what will happen in the fall or next year. What I can tell you is that the establishment of this architecture (of NATO's security assistance to Ukraine - ed.), in my opinion, gives us the best opportunity to provide Ukraine with the support that it not only needs, but fundamentally deserves from its partners in the West. And I will do everything I can to ensure that this continues," Sullivan said.

He also noted that European countries are already strengthening their defense capabilities, which, in his opinion, will help Ukraine in its efforts to defend itself. Sullivan emphasized the importance of NATO's role in the long-term support of Ukraine, noting that the alliance will continue its assistance for many years, regardless of changes in the US administration.

Earlier, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said that after the NATO summit, the US position on allowing the use of ATACMS missiles to strike deep into Russia had not changed. At the same time, she emphasized that the Ukrainian Defense Forces have other long-range weapons for such strikes, which were not transferred by Washington.

As reported, Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the head of the Presidential Administration, explained that by the phrase "strikes deep into Russia," Ukraine does not mean a demonstration of single explosions in Russia, but the systematic destruction of Russian air bases and military production facilities.
