President of the European Commission says when Russia will be able to join the peace process to end the war

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen did not rule out that the aggressor country will need to be involved in the peace process to end the war in Ukraine. However, Moscow's participation is possible only if it expresses its readiness for peace based on the UN Charter.

The European politician said this at a press conference following the first Peace Summit in Switzerland on June 16. Von der Leyen called on the Kremlin to hear the call of the international community to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, to end violence and to return deported Ukrainian children.

"When the Russian Federation says it is ready for peace, based on the UN Charter, then it will be time to engage it in peace efforts. And I hope it will happen quickly," the EC President said.

At the same time, she acknowledged that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is not serious about ending the war. The Kremlin leader insists on seizing even more territory of Ukraine and disarming Ukraine, leaving it vulnerable to further aggression.

Von der Leyen emphasized that no country would ever accept such terrible conditions, so she called it vital that Ukraine be able to resist Russian aggression.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, earlier Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Kyiv realizes that sooner or later it will come to direct talks with Russia. However, this conversation cannot be conducted in the language of ultimatums.
