Pentagon urges to provide Ukraine with white phosphorus shells, but White House rejects offer – media

Senior Pentagon officials have recommended providing Ukraine with white phosphorus ammunition for use on the battlefield. However, the White House has repeatedly rejected this idea.

This was reported by NBC News. The US military believes that white phosphorus shells can be useful for camouflaging military units due to the smoke and light they create when used.

If approved, the ammunition would not be listed as military aid, as was the case with previous arms shipments to Ukraine, which were not publicly reported. Two officials indicated that concerns about possible civilian casualties prevented President Joe Biden's administration from supporting the proposal.

White phosphorus is a substance that ignites instantly in the presence of oxygen, burns at very high temperatures, and is difficult to extinguish. It can stick to surfaces, including skin and clothing, causing serious burns.

The smoke produced during its use can be harmful to the respiratory system and eyes. In the past, during major conflicts such as World War II and the Vietnam War, the United States used white phosphorus against enemy forces, but its role has changed in today's environment.

It is worth noting that white phosphorus munitions are not banned and are not classified as chemical weapons under international standards. However, the military using them is obliged to adhere to the principle of distinction between military targets and civilian areas.

As a reminder, Ukraine will soon receive Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) long-range cruise missiles from the United States. These munitions can strike at a distance of up to 150 km and weigh up to 500 kg.

It is worth noting that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the United States has decided to provide Ukraine with significant defense assistance totaling $7.9 billion. Additional sanctions will also be imposed against the aggressor country of Russia.
