IAEA reveals significant damage to one of ZNPP units: details

At the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in the city of Enerhodar, which was seized by Russian terrorists, significant damage was found to one of the power units. It is a significant damage to the windows of the turbine hall of the fourth power unit.

Since the beginning of the occupation, the volume of repair work at all power units has been reduced due to a shortage of maintenance staff, the absence of external contractors, and a lack of spare parts required for maintenance, including critical components. This is stated in the report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said that Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which was seized by the Russian occupiers, poses serious nuclear safety risks. In addition to the nuclear safety and security risks, ZNPP continues to rely on the only remaining 750-kilovolt power line for external electricity.

This line is critical for reactor cooling and other important nuclear safety and security functions. It is noteworthy that prior to the seizure of the plant by Russian terrorists, there were four off-site electric power transmission lines.

The IAEA found out that only about a quarter of the full-time maintenance staff are currently working at ZNPP. Due to a significant reduction in staff, there is currently no systematic schedule for maintenance and operational control at the Zaporizhzhia NPP.

In addition, Grossi said he was concerned about Russian military activity at the Enerhodar nuclear power plant. At the same time, the IAEA team recorded explosions near the nuclear power plant.

"I saw clear signs of military preparations when I visited the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant a little over three weeks ago. Since then, our experts on the ground have frequently reported hearing explosions, sometimes suggesting intense shelling in the vicinity. I am deeply concerned about the situation at the plant," Grossi said.

Earlier, Grossi stated that there is a viable solution for the safe operation of the Zaporizhzhya NPP temporarily seized by Russian troops. However, international support is needed to implement it.

Recall that the mayor of Melitopol, Zaporizhzhia, Ivan Fedorov, suggested that the Russian occupiers could take hostages of the employees of the temporarily seized Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Enerhodar. Water and food have already been delivered to the plant.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, the Russian invaders are preparing a plan to "evacuate" the Zaporizhzhia NPP. Collaborators and brought Rosatom employees have already been warned, the National Resistance Centre said.
