By attacking Ukraine, Russia also attacked international law: Swiss president at the UN

By launching a full-scale invasion, Russia not only attacked the civilian population of Ukraine but also violated the principles of international law and multilateral cooperation. Thus, Russia must be held accountable for these actions.

This was stated by Swiss President Alain Berset during the general debate of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. He recalled the basic principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

"The post-war order is experiencing the greatest crisis since the Second World War. By launching an aggressive war against Ukraine, the Russian Federation has attacked not only a peaceful country but also international law and multilateralism," he said.

He noted that "this aggression is the work of a permanent member of the UN Security Council, which, according to the UN Charter, has the "primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security".

"Today, we must recall the basic principles enshrined in the UN Charter and ensure that we fulfill our mandate," Berset said.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly summit in New York, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia uses weapons not only against Ukraine but also against the entire civilized world. This is the first personal participation of the Ukrainian leader on the sidelines of such a meeting since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.
