British intelligence said the Ukrainian Armed Forces counteroffensive in the south was successful
Ukrainian Defense Forces advanced on the southern front and continued their offensive along the Mokri Yala River in the Donetsk region. Thus, our defenders secured the village of Urozhaine despite stiff resistance from the Russian occupiers.
This is stated in the summary of British intelligence published on Twitter by the Ministry of Defense of the UK. Russian troops continued reconnaissance in the Kupiansk direction but made no significant progress.
British intelligence also noted that both sides faced the same problems on the front. They are both trying to defeat well-entrenched forces while having limited uncommitted forces to launch new attacks.
CBS earlier reported that the Ukrainian military made progress in its counter-offensive. The AFU overcame a Russian minefield and began the battle for the liberation of Tokmak in the Zaporizhzhia region.
It is noted that one of the goals of Ukraine's counter-offensive is to advance south through strong Russian fortifications to retake Melitopol, which is called the gateway to Crimea. This city is also a vital Russian transit hub along this route.
As reported by OBOZREVATEL:
- ISW noted that Ukraine has many options to stop the Russians' critical logistics routes along the Azov Sea coast and it is premature to assess the AFU's counteroffensive. The analysts believe that the general weakening of the Russian defense line creates opportunities for any Ukrainian breakthrough;
- ISW analysts also emphasized that the Russian occupation forces have invested considerable effort, resources and manpower to maintain settlements such as Robotyne and Urozhaine. Ukraine's recent success in these areas reflects a broader degradation of Russian forces' defenses.
