AFU will have to pass three enemy defense lines: a British general predicted the course of events of the war in Ukraine
Ukraine's Defense Forces need to pass three more defense lines of the Russian occupiers in the south to reach the sea. To rebuild a powerful air force to repel enemy attacks, the country needs time until mid-June 2024.
This was stated by British General Richard Barrons, former commander of the Joint Forces of the Kingdom. According to the Financial Times, he expressed his belief that the AFU will not displace the Russian troops during the current counter-offensive, but they may succeed in at least two years.
It should be noted that the retired British army officer once took part in peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Iraq. In his opinion, the Armed Forces of Ukraine can win the war against the Russian occupiers before 2025 only if Western support is strengthened.
"Ukraine's current counter-offensive will not dislodge Russia. But no one expected it to. It is also unlikely to halve the area of occupation before winter, which could be one of the most optimistic goals," he emphasized.
General Barrons stressed that the Ukrainian army would have to pass three more lines of defense against the invaders before reaching the sea,. However, this is"unlikely to be realized before the end of 2023".
The retired officer estimates that Ukraine has enough air defense to cover only about a third of the country's territory. According to him, the shortage of artillery ammunition has been solved by supplies of US cluster munitions only temporarily.
"Ukraine will need time until mid-2024 to rebuild a sufficiently powerful air force," Barrons said.
He added that Kyiv should conserve its military reserves now.
"It would be a disaster to allow what is left of the 10th Corps, which is Ukraine's untapped reserve, to be smashed to pieces on the way through Russian defenses because of the rushed timeline," the British general explained.
As reported by OBOZREVATEL, the commander of the Tavria operational-strategic grouping of troops Brigadier General Oleksandr Tarnavsky said that the AFU broke through the first enemy defense line in the Zaporizhzhia direction after several weeks of careful demining, expecting a speedy advance thereafter. However, the main battles are still ahead, as the occupiers are pulling up reserves to this section of the front.
