A unique target for the Armed Forces of Ukraine: after shooting down the A-50, the occupants again raised the rare M-55 Geophysics into the sky

After shooting down the A-50, the occupiers took the rare M-55 Geophysics into the sky

The Russian occupation army has once again taken to the air the rare M-55 Geophysics aircraft with special equipment for electronic reconnaissance. According to analysts, the occupiers have decided to put this aircraft back into operation as a "flying laboratory."

With the help of the M-55 "Geophysics", the Russians are probably testing or working out technical issues with suspended containers with reconnaissance equipment that will be suspended under Russian tactical aircraft. This was reported by the Defense Express portal.

A rare aircraft was spotted with two specific containers under the wings. It is about the equipment of radio technical intelligence UKR-RT, which the Russians created specifically for the Su-34. The second electronic intelligence container is UKR-RL.

According to military experts, the Russian army has decided to return the M-55 "Geophysics" to operation in order to test radio equipment that will be used on modern tactical aircraft of the Russian Federation. Analysts also assume that Putin's forces will try to use the M-55 Geophysics to conduct demonstration flights near the border with NATO member states. In this way, the terrorist country of the Russian Federation can simulate intelligence or actually collect the necessary intelligence.

Oleksandr Kovalenko, a military and political observer of the Information Resistance group, noted that the rare M-55 Geophysics is used by the Russians to strengthen their aviation reconnaissance component. According to him, the occupiers took this step because the potential of their reconnaissance aircraft is limited after the destruction of the A-50 long-range radar detection and control aircraft. He also added that M-55 "Geophysics" can become a unique target for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Kovalenko explained that the UKR-RL electronic reconnaissance equipment can detect single and group ground targets at a range of up to 300 km. At the same time, with the help of UKR-RT, the enemy can detect communications equipment and radars, determine their coordinates and provide other information used for a strike.

In November 2023, it became known that the occupiers had mothballed the rare M-55 Geophysics aircraft. It was created in Soviet times as a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft for missile strikes.

Earlier it was reported that the A-50 long-range radar detection and control aircraft was destroyed over the Sea of Azov in early 2024. In addition, the defenders "landed" an IL-22 airborne control center of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

The same aircraft was hit on February 26, 2023, at the Machulishchi military airfield in Belarus. The front and center parts of the aircraft were damaged, as well as the avionics and radar antenna.
