Welt: Germany continues to hesitate with arms deliveries to Ukraine; so far it has handed over only 10 Leopards tanks

This situation has drawn criticism from the opposition

The German authorities are delaying the delivery of the military aid package promised to Kyiv in May. Germany has so far handed over only 10 Leopard 1 tanks.

This was reported by the German edition of Die Welt, citing its calculations. Thus, Berlin pledged to provide weapons in May as part of the new package as soon as possible, but Ukraine has received little of it so far.

Official and unofficial sources confirm that Germany has provided Ukraine with only 10 Leopard 1 tanks out of 110 promised in the spring.

Kyiv has also yet to receive four IRIS-T missile defense systems in addition to the two delivered.

No Marder vehicles have been sent to Ukraine since May as well. Kyiv has received only 12 of the 18 Gepard self-propelled air defense systems.

This situation has drawn criticism from the opposition.

"I'm not sure the federal government has fully realized the gravity of the situation," said Thomas Erndl, a politician from the CSU who is deputy chairman of the Bundestag's foreign affairs committee.

According to him, "despite all the full-fledged statements of support," Germany's behavior does not justify its responsibility for security in Europe.

It is worth noting that the Leopard 1 (called simply Leopard before the new Leopard 2 model) is a second-generation German main battle tank that was developed and produced in West Germany from 1965 to 1984.

The basic version of the tank has a welded hull, a cast turret and an unstabilized L7A3 rifled 105 mm gun with a 51 caliber barrel length. The ammunition consists of 60 rounds, 45 of which are located in the tank hull and 15 in the turret. Additionally, there is a twin 7.62 mm MG3 machine gun with 1250 rounds of ammunition.

Earlier it was reported that Germany will provide Ukraine with military aid worth about 17 billion euros by 2027. This means that the FRG will provide "the greatest support, including military" among Ukraine's partners after the United States. According to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Germany is the country that provides the most support to Ukraine after the USA.

We shall remind you that Germany urged the authorities to provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus cruise missiles with a range of up to 500 kilometers once again. They believe that these missiles would help Ukrainian forces to interrupt the logistical chains of the Russian army and could revitalize Ukraine's counteroffensive.
