Russia tried to hit Kyiv with 48N6DM missile on September 2: why it is particularly dangerous

Russia tried to hit Kyiv with 48N6DM missile from S-400

During the attack on Kyiv on September 2, Russian troops used, among other things, a 48N6DM anti-aircraft missile from the S-400 system in surface-to-surface mode. It was destroyed by air defense forces.

This was reported by the Ukrainian military portal Defence Express, citing its own sources. A particular danger of this missile is that it has extremely low accuracy in surface-to-surface mode.

Because of this, they can primarily threaten civilian infrastructure and civilians.

Anti-aircraft missiles of this type have a large warhead weighing 180 kilograms, equipped with a significant amount of fragments, which increases the damage.

Defence Express emphasized that Kyiv is more protected in terms of air defense than the capital of the aggressor country, Moscow. Kyiv's air defense was able to successfully repel a massive attack with the combined use of ballistic and cruise missiles.

Where it was launched from

The question remains as to where the S-400 missile was launched from to strike Kyiv on September 2.

"It should be noted that according to the official report of the Air Force on the morning of September 2, there were references to the fact that the Russians used four 48N6DM missiles from the S-400 and one missile of unknown type, which indicated the Belgorod region of the Russian Federation as the launch site," the statement said.

In the past, the launch of 48N6DM at our capital took place from the territory of the Bryansk region of the Russian Federation, or only 45 kilometers from the state border of Ukraine.

"However, we should also take into account Russian reports that it is working on a variant of missiles for the S-400 for surface-to-surface firing, which should be characterized by an increased range and increased warhead power," Defence Express added.

It should be recalled that during the attack on Kyiv on the morning of January 23 this year, Russian terrorists also attacked the city with a 48N6DM missile.

On the morning of September 2, Russian troops launched a combined attack on Kyiv using a large number of cruise and ballistic missiles. Explosions were heard in the city, air defense systems were operating, destruction and fires were recorded in four districts of the capital due to falling debris, and there were three victims: as of 10:20 a.m., there were already three.

Over Kyiv, air defense forces destroyed more than 20 air targets: more than ten cruise missiles, ten ballistic missiles and an attack drone.
