One of the most destructive: British intelligence assesses the consequences of the hacker attack on Kyivstar
The hacker attack on Kyivstar mobile operator has become one of the most devastating cyberattacks on Ukrainian networks since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion. Not only millions of civilian subscribers were affected by the disruption of the operator's equipment.
Government resources and emergency services have also fallen victim to hackers. This was reported on social network X, formerly known as Twitter, by the UK military intelligence.
The intelligence agency recalled that Ukraine's largest mobile operator suffered a cyberattack on December 12. The negative effect on mobile communications and data services lasted at least two days.
As a result of the hacker attack, users were left without a mobile signal and the ability to use home Internet services. However, no personal data was compromised during the attack.
British intelligence noted that the cyberattack disrupted the operation of air raid sirens, some banks, ATMs and retail terminals. In addition, on December 12, the Ukrainian bank Monobank was subjected to a DDoS attack, which limited access to the bank's website for some time.
The agency noted that the cyberattack on Kyivstar disrupted the work of government resources and emergency services in Ukraine. Therefore, the UK assessed this incident as one of the most destructive cyberattacks on Ukrainian networks since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion.
As a reminder, as of the evening of December 15, Kyivstar mobile operator restored access to the mobile Internet throughout the entire territory of Ukraine controlled by the Ukrainian government. The service is currently available in all communication standards, including 4G.
As reported by OBOZ.UA:
- Kyivstar mobile network was restored in the evening of December 13. Residents of the western regions were the first to get voice communication, but within a few hours the coverage appeared in other regions.
- Before that, Kyivstar voiced several scenarios for restoring mobile services after the hacker attack. The baseline scenario assumed that the ability to make calls would be restored on December 13. However, the mobile operator also warned of "uncertainty".
