Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she allegedly tried to stop Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. According to her, she sought to do so with the diplomatic tools at her disposal.

"I tried with what I had at my disposal to prevent this situation. The fact that it failed is not proof that it was wrong to try. Diplomacy is a necessity," said the former chancellor.

When asked about possible scenarios for the end of Russia's war against Ukraine, Merkel noted that she did not want to comment on this. At the same time, the politician advocated thinking about a future scenario in which negotiations could take place.

Moreover, Merkel once again praised herself for Russia's aggressive policies and called the creation of the so-called "Minsk process" after the 2014 annexation of Crimea the right move. "I support these diplomatic attempts. I was most intensely concerned about Ukraine. To my great regret, there were quite a few who were not that concerned. For example, in the European Council, it was Germany and France that sought to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine," Merkel said of the start of Russian aggression in 2014.
