Despite the US elections: British Defense Secretary Shepps gives Ukraine a powerful promise
The United Kingdom will continue to support Ukraine regardless of the outcome of next year's US elections. This statement was made on Sunday, September 24, by the newly appointed Secretary of Defense Grant Shapps.
This was reported by CNN. It is noted that in the United States, Republicans are divided in their support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and recent polls show that most Republicans believe that the United States should reduce its contribution to helping Ukraine in the war with Russia.
A poll conducted by CNN in August showed that a majority of Americans now oppose increasing funding for Ukraine, with the number of opponents rising to 71% among Republicans.
Instead, Grant Shepps, answering a question about possible actions of the UK in case a Republican president is elected in the US and decides to stop supporting Ukraine, said that London's support for Ukraine is "unwavering."
Earlier it was reported that politician Grant Shepps would become the new UK Defense Secretary. He said he was looking forward to working with the brave men and women of the country's armed forces and promised to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, on August 31, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace announced that he was resigning from his post. The resignation of the head of the defense ministry was accepted by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. In his letter to the prime minister, Wallace said that the ministerial position was "costing him and his family dearly", so he finally decided to resign.
