Russian drone used to attack Ukraine crashes in Romania at night, forming a huge crater
On the night of December 14, one of the drones launched by Russia at Ukraine crashed in Romania, violating the airspace of a NATO country.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense reported the formation of a 1.5-meter-deep crater near the village of Grindu, 6.5 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.
F-16 aircraft from the Romanian Air Force and Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft from the German Air Force were deployed to monitor the airspace.
"The Ministry strongly condemns the attacks by the Russian Federation on certain objects and elements of civilian infrastructure in Ukrainian ports on the Danube. These attacks are unjustified and seriously contradict the norms of international humanitarian law," Romania said.
Romania is holding consultations with NATO partners on this situation. The Romanian Foreign Ministry also summoned Russian Ambassador to Bucharest Valery Kuzmin over the fall of the Russian drone.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly demands an end to the repeated attacks on the Ukrainian population and civilian infrastructure, as well as the irresponsible escalation of the security situation by the Russian Federation, including on the border between Romania and Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates its strong condemnation of these attacks against civilian objects, which violate international humanitarian law and qualify as war crimes," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
As a reminder, the aggressor country Russia launched four dozen Shahed-136/131 kamikaze drones at the southern regions of Ukraine on the night of December 14. The air defense system effectively worked on enemy targets in Odesa region, but some downing drones resulted in casualties.
Earlier, Romania, as a NATO member, called on the Alliance to take measures to counter Russia. Romania has stated that Russian strikes on Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea and on the Danube lead to "incidents" on Romanian territory. In particular, Romania proposes to increase air patrols and deploy radars: this will show the Kremlin that the Black Sea is strategically important to NATO.
As reported, Romania plans to install the latest equipment to counter drones on the border with Ukraine. The decision to install the system, which is called the most effective in Europe, was made after the incidents with Russian Shahed drones that fell on the territory of Romania.
