A complete blackout occured at Zaporizhzhia NPP: details

Russia creates an emergency situation at ZNPP again

On December 1, another blackout occurred at Zaporizhzhia NPP: the last power line was cut off in the middle of the night during an air raid alarm. Ukrainian specialists managed to restore power only on the morning of December 2.

This was reported by Energoatom. It added that due to the full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation and the occupation of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe by Russians, threats to nuclear and radiation safety at ZNPP are increasing.

According to the report, on the evening of December 1, a 330 kV Zaporizhzhia TPP-Ferrosplavna power line was broken. ZNPP was receiving power from the Ukrainian power grid through it.

At 02:31 p.m., the last 750 kV Zaporizhzhia NPP-Dniprovska power line was de-energized during an air raid alarm.

After that, a complete blackout occurred at Zaporizhzhia NPP. All 20 diesel generators were switched on automatically to meet the facility's needs. Eight of them were then left in operation.

Energoatom emphasized that another blackout poses a threat to nuclear and radiation safety.

"The biggest safety threat in this state is at Unit 4. It is caused by the fact that the occupiers used it in violation of the terms of the license to operate NPP reactor units issued by the Ukrainian regulator and kept it hot. The de-energization of the main circulation pumps that cool the core leads to the transition of the reactor unit to the natural circulation mode. This mode is difficult for the reactor installation as its duration is limited by the design and it can lead to the failure of the main equipment of the power unit. The unit needs to be urgently transferred to a cold state," Energoatom explained the threats.

Ukrainian specialists worked to restore ZNPP's connection to the Ukrainian power grid until the morning of December 2. As of 7 a.m., the 750 kV power line was restored.

As a reminder, on November 24, EU member states, joined by a number of non-member states, issued a joint statement that the European Union would never recognize Russia's illegal attempts to seize ZNPP.

They also called on Russia to immediately withdraw all its troops from the strategic facility.
