Sevilla and Roma meet in the final

Spain's Sevilla defeated Italy's Roma to win the Europa League for the seventh time in its history. The final match at the Puskász Arena in Budapest ended in a penalty shootout 4-1. The regular time ended with the score 1-1. In extra time no goals were scored.

Roma's defeat prevented its head coach Jose Mourinho from setting a fantastic record in world soccer. The 60-year-old Portuguese could become the most decorated coach in the history of major European competitions, surpassing Giovanni Trapattoni. Prior to that, the Special One (Mourinho's nickname) had two Champions League wins (2004 and 2010), two Europa League titles (2003, 2017) and the Conference League (2022).

The match began in a hard-fought struggle, which sometimes turned into quite tough fights. The main referee of the match, Anthony Taylor of Great Britain, let the teams fight without rushing with the yellow cards.

The situation changed in the 35th minute when the visitors opened the scoring. Rakitic fumbled with Cristante in midfield, lost the ball, was picked up by Gianluca Mancini and took Paulo Dibala one-on-one with a long-range pass for the Argentine to shoot on target.

Mourinho's side lost their lead in dramatic fashion. In the second half, Sevilla came out in force, but the hero of the first half scored. After a Navas cross, Mancini sent the ball into his own net.

The penalty shootout saw no goals and Sevilla were awarded a penalty shootout.
