Very surprised: Ukraine's goalkeeper did not know about reaching the Euro 2024 playoffs
Ukraine goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin was sure that the 0-0 loss to Italy in the decisive match of the 2024 European Championship qualifiers would leave the team out of the tournament. The Benfica Lisbon goalkeeper did not know that the Blue and Yellows would still be able to compete for a ticket to the championship through the playoffs.
Trubin said this in an interview with the Vzbirna YouTube channel. Anatolii added that he learned about the head-to-head matches from social media and noted that he had no preference as to who to play in the playoffs. The footballer emphasized that all teams will be under serious pressure because of the cost of making a mistake.
"If it weren't for Instagram, I wouldn't have known we had a second chance at all. I was only focused on the game against Italy. If you get a chance to get to the Euros directly, you have to use it. But we didn't succeed. It is good that we have the playoffs. It is clear that it is not yet clear who we will play, but we will see who we get, at the end of March we will get together and work. It doesn't matter who we play. All the teams are good, and the Euro is at stake. There will be a lot of pressure. Whoever can cope with it will win," Trubin said.
As a reminder, a loud scandal erupted around the Ukraine-Italy match after the referee failed to award a penalty kick to the visitors for a foul on Mykhailo Mudryk. Even the Azzurri's captain, Gianluigi Donnarumma, admitted that the defender had violated the rules.
Social media reacted strongly to the episode, and the Italian media did not defend the referee. The Ukrainian national team has already learned about all the schedules for the Euro 2024 playoffs before the draw on November 23.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported, the European Football Union (UEFA) has banned Ukrainian fans from holding a rally to remind them of Russian aggression at the match with Italy.
