"Unacceptable": Russian Olympic champion calls Yaroslava Maguchikh's "Glory to Ukraine!" cry immoral after winning the 2023 World Cup

Mamiashvili criticised Maguchikh

The President of the Russian Wrestling Federation, Mikhail Mamiashvili, has called Yaroslava Maguchikh's patriotic cry of "Glory to Ukraine!" after winning the 2023 World Championships in athletics unacceptable. The winner of the 1988 Olympics spoke about the violation of "ethical and moral standards" by our compatriot.

Mamiashvili said this in an interview with the propaganda news agency TASS. He repeated the traditional Kremlin narratives about the politicisation of sport, forgetting, for example, how Russian gymnast Ivan Kulyak came out with the war symbol Z at the World Cup awards ceremony.

"No ethics or morals, including those related to sports, apply here. I'm not a fan of this athlete, how she should live and what she should shout, but there are other places to do this. As for the sports ground, according to the statutes and the Olympic Charter, such things are unacceptable. She has the right to do what she sees fit, to perform somewhere in her square, but to use a sports ground is unacceptable. I am sure that this will go unnoticed," Mamiashvili said.

The day before, journalists from the Russian portal Sport24 demanded that Maguchikh be fined at least for chanting "Glory to Ukraine!" at the 2023 World Cup. And Olympic champion Svetlana Zhurova said that the athlete was allegedly being forced to "say nasty things" about Russian aggression.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, two-time Olympic champion Dmitry Vasilyev expressed outrage at Yaroslava Maguchikh, who was noted for her patriotic cry "Glory to Ukraine!".
