Ukraine's biggest fan wins Roland Garros, beating the tournament's main sensation in the final
World number one Iga Świątek from Poland has won the French Open tennis championship. The 22-year-old Warsaw native defeated Karolina Muchová (WTA No. 43) in the final of the €49.6 million tournament with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory.
The Pole started the match brilliantly, as if in training, taking her opponent to the corners of the court. Muchová could do nothing against the favourite, deservedly losing 6-2.
In the second set, Świątek's extravaganza continued, and it seemed that the world's best tennis player would easily take her third Roland Garros. But instead, Muchová imposed her game on her opponent, unexpectedly levelling the score.
At these moments, the Polish tennis player looked completely dismantled. Despite her vast experience, she didn't know what to do with her opponent, and as a result, she lost a set in the final of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.
The third game became a real game of nerves, where none of the athletes was going to give up, but Iga proved to be stronger.
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, a few days earlier, Muchová became the author of a huge sensation at Roland Garros. The Czech Republic's No. 5 defeated the best tennis player in Belarus, Arina Sobolenko (WTA No. 2).
It should be noted that since February last year, Świątek has been constantly declaring his support for Ukraine, and he always goes out on the court with a yellow and blue ribbon on his headgear.
