Ukraine wins first medal at the 2024 Paralympics
Ukrainian swimmer Anton Kol has brought Ukraine its first medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games. The 34-year-old native of Nikopol in the S1 class (severe motor disorders) won a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke in a hard-fought battle.
For Kol, the 2024 Paralympics were the third in his career,Suspilne reports. The Ukrainian made his debut at the Paralympic Games in Rio 2016, where he became a two-time bronze medalist: he took third place in the 50m and 100m backstroke. In Tokyo 2020, he improved his results in both disciplines and won two silver medals.
At the 2024 Paralympics, 34-year-old Kohl qualified for the finals automatically. He was one of seven athletes who competed for medals in this class at this distance.
In the final, Kohl swam almost the entire distance in third place, behind Italian Francesco Bettelli. However, in the last 20 meters of the course, he overtook his rival and became a silver medalist.
