Famous Italian skier Matilda Lorenzi died after a serious fall during a training session. The tragedy occurred in the mountains of South Tyrol province. Matilda was 19 years old, and in March she became the national champion in giant slalom.

"The International Ski Federation (FIS) expresses its deepest condolences on the tragic loss of Matilda Lorenzi," the FIS said in a statement.

According to the federation, Lorenzi fell during a training session on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales near Italy. Olympics.com reported that the athlete was immediately treated and taken by helicopter to a hospital in Bolzano, where she died.

Federico Tomassoni, 27, a ski-cross champion for the Italian national team, is devastated by the loss of his girlfriend Matilda. Federico describes their relationship as an incredibly strong bond that began during their military service together.

Federico painfully recalls his last moment with Matilda, when he kissed her until her last heartbeat. Despite the tragedy, Federico acknowledges the fatality of the fall, recalling that he too risked his life in a fall last winter.

The pair had big ambitions, including the Olympics and the World Championships. They trained together in the summer, albeit in different disciplines, and recently had a wonderful vacation in Ibiza.
