Referee Elif Karaarslan, 24, was caught up in a high-profile scandal after a video of her having sex with 61-year-old FIFA inspector Orhan Erdemir was leaked online. After the video became public and went viral on social media, the Turkish Football Federation revoked the licenses of the main characters in the video.

Karaarslan is a referee in Turkey's lower league. She started her football career at Libadi Sports Club and later played for Bakirkiyi Gençlikspor and Beşiktaş.

Elif ended her football career after a serious injury. At the age of 16, while playing for Beşiktaş, she suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

During this period, she was impressed by a foreign female referee she saw on social media and decided to follow in her footsteps. To do this, Elifa graduated from the Faculty of Sports Sciences at the University of Marmara.

She played her first match not as a player, but as a second referee on February 29, 2020.
