Russian tennis player committed a "disgusting act" at a tournament in Madrid. Video.
Russian tennis player Pavel Kotov, who is ranked 101st in the ATP rankings, threatened his mother during the qualifying rounds of the Masters tournament in Madrid. The incident occurred in the first round match with Kimmer Coppejans (ATP #178) from Belgium.
In the third game, with the score 5:3 0:30, the 24-year-old Russian asked the woman to shut up.
"Mum, if you don't shut the f*ck up right now, I'm going to hit you with the ball, is that clear?" - Kotov said.
After that, Pavel was unable to serve for the match, and Coppejans levelled the score. At the end of the match, the Russian was able to play two match points and win the game: 6:4, 3:6, 7:6(6).
The tennis player later said he had apologised to his mother.
"Unfortunately, I don't always manage to control myself, and there are times like this. I understand perfectly well that I have set a bad example with this disgusting behaviour," Kotov said.
A well-known Russian commentator, Alexei Andronov, called the Russian athlete's action "disgusting".
He also shared information that Kotov has had a difficult relationship with his mother for a long time.
"If I had a mum like Pasha's, I would say the same thing, she's a witch, she's called that everywhere. The point is that my mother is not just a spectator, she travels around as a witch, whispering incomprehensible things all the time," Andronov wrote on his Telegram channel.
The following day, Kotov lost to Esuki Watanuki 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in the deciding match for the main draw.
