Russian junior hockey champion Yevgeny Khvalko Jr. died at the age of 17, the Russian Ball Hockey Federation (RHF) reports. The last team of the athlete was Kuzbas of Kemerovo.

TASS reports that Khvalko picked up a tick on vacation in his hometown of Krasnoturyinsk. He was diagnosed with encephalitis. The titled hockey player was transported to St. Petersburg for treatment and put into an artificial coma. A month later he died.

The player was the son of the famous Yevgeny Khvalko, who once played for the Russian and Belarusian national teams in ball hockey and became the country's champion in the sport four times.
