Manzano did not announce a penalty

Ukraine's decisive match in the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy (0:0) ended in a loud scandal. In the third compensated minute of the second half, referee Jesus Gil Manzano did not award a penalty for the fall of the Blue and Yellows winger Mykhailo Mudryk in the opponent's penalty area.

The episode provoked a wide response among experts and fans. Ukrainian football fans are surely convinced that the Spanish refereeing team deprived Rebrov's team of an 11-meter penalty, a goal that would have taken the Blue and Yellows to the European Championships, bypassing the playoffs.

The legendary captain of the Italian national team, Giuseppe Bergomi, agreed with them. In his opinion, Mudryk fell in the penalty area of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma after a foul by defender Bryan Cristante. "There was contact, nothing to add," the 1982 world champion said.

The head coach of Ukraine, Serhii Rebrov, commented on the moment categorically. "In my opinion, there was a penalty, but, as I say, it's not our call," the coach said.

We invite OBOZ.UA readers to watch the video of Mykhailo's fall and share their opinions on the referees' decision.

The moment looks especially resonant after the words of the President of the European Football Union (UEFA) Aleksander Čeferin, who called Italy's entry into Euro 2024 mandatory.
