Karma catches up with UEFA vice-president for supporting Russia

The European Football Union's decision to return Russian youth teams to its competitions has cost Swedish UEFA Vice President Karl-Erik Nilsson his job. The 66-year-old official is no longer the head of the national sports organization, which he had headed since May.

Karl-Erik Nilsson resigned as head of the Swedish Sports Confederation (RF) after UEFA unexpectedly eased the general ban on Russian teams, introduced 19 months ago amid the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

"It is very difficult now to decide to step aside because I was happy working in this position and was committed to my work," Nilsson was quoted as saying by AR.

As reported by OBOZREVATEL, on September 27, the Swedish Football Association (SvFF) refused to allow the Russian U-17 women's national team to participate in the European Championships to be held in Sweden in 2024.

In addition, the Swedish and Danish national teams announced that they would not play with the Russians in the qualifiers for the European Youth Championship. The Scandinavians expressed their support for Ukraine, which continues to resist Russian aggression.
