The incident took place before the Netherlands-Poland game.

German police opened fire on a man who threatened them with an axe and a petrol bomb in northern Hamburg, hours before the Euro 2024 match between the Netherlands and Poland. The incident occurred during a march of Dutch football fans.

The cops started shooting after the man refused to hand over his weapon. At first, law enforcement officers used pepper spray and then fired several shots, after which the offender fell to the ground, German news agency dpa reports, citing Hamburg police.

A police spokesman said that there was no information indicating that the incident was related to the football match. The attacker was wounded and is being treated, authorities added.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, Germany has put its national police on high alert during the tournament, which started on Friday and will last until July 14, fearing possible violence from fans and terrorist attacks.
