Titled grandmaster refuses to play in Russia

World Rapid Chess Champion (Astana, 2012) and World Blitz Champion (Doha, 2016) Sergey Karjakin, who changed his citizenship from Ukrainian to Russian in 2009, refused to play in the super final of the Russian Championship. The Russian Chess Federation was outraged by the 33-year-old's actions.

"Thus, the grandmaster, who often complains about the lack of tournaments in the country, once again refused to fight for the title of Russian champion, which he has never won, in the main competition of our calendar, disappointing his many fans," the Russian Chess Federation said in a statement.

In their comments, Russian fans ridiculed the Crimean's action.

"In words, he is a magnus, but in deeds, he is a common bellwether", "Even his own federation is already speaking unflatteringly of him. Everyone is fed up with him," users write.

Fans speculate that Karjakin simply lost all his form.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Karjakin refused to play at the World Cup under a neutral flag in the middle of this summer.

It should be noted that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Karjakin has been supporting the "SVO" and demonstrating the z-symbol in every possible way, for which he received a six-month disqualification from FIDE.

On 2 June last year, Karjakin received a state award from the aggressor country. This event was called a real disgrace online and questioned the official reason for the authorities' decision.

Last year, Sergei travelled to Donetsk to deliver aid to the 117th rifle regiment of the 'people's police' of the 'Donetsk People's Republic'.
