The Russian girlfriend of former IBO welterweight champion Chris van Heerden (28-3-1, 12 KOs) was arrested in Russia. The South African boxer wrote about Ksenia Karelin's detention on his social media.

"Please pray. Russia has detained my girlfriend. We are fighting for you and we love you, Ksenia," said Hurden.

The news of her arrest came on Tuesday, after several Russian agencies published a video showing a woman in a courtroom handcuffed and blindfolded. It is unclear when the video was filmed.

The First Department group, which consists of lawyers who deal with espionage and high treason cases, reported that the FSB arrested Karelin for transferring $51.80 to the Ukrainian charity Razom. The transaction was made on February 24, 2022.

The FSB alleges that the funds contributed by Karelin were used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to purchase tactical medical supplies, equipment, attack weapons and ammunition.

Karelin faces 12 years to life in prison under the article on high treason (275 of the Russian Criminal Code).

On the eve of 2024, Karelina went to Yekaterinburg to see her parents. On January 27, Ksenia was detained by a police patrol for "disorderly conduct," the judge gave her a 14-day sentence, and at the end of this period, she was charged under a new article. She was detained for another two months. The Verkh-Isetsky District Court of Yekaterinburg arrested her on February 8 for two months.

Ksenia Karelin, 32, a model and ballerina, is a native of Yekaterinburg. She immigrated to the United States on a work/study visa in 2016.

Since 2019, Ksenia has worked as a manager at a spa in Los Angeles. In 2021, she became a U.S. citizen.

In the summer of 2023, she married Eugene Havana from Baltimore, Maryland, but divorced soon after, maintaining friendly relations with her ex-husband.

"We are all in shock," Ksenia's former mother-in-law, Eleonora Srebroski, told VOA's Russian Service in an interview.

"She's such a bright and kind person that I don't know who in this world would say anything bad about her," Srebroski said of Karelina. She is a beauty, a smart girl, a dancer, always striving to realize her plans and make everyone around her happy."

Ksenia Karelin appealed her arrest. The appeal hearing is scheduled for February 29.
