Famous Ukrainian goalkeeper and ex-coach of U-21 national team dies unexpectedly

Oleksandr Humeniuk, a former goalkeeper and coach, has suddenly passed away on January 4, 2025, at the age of 49, the press service of the Vyshhorod club Dinaz, where Oleksandr worked in recent years, reports. The cause of the tragedy has not been disclosed.

Humeniuk began his career in Khmelnytskyi, training at the Podillia Children's and Youth Sports School. In the early 90s, he joined the youth team of Dynamo Kyiv, where he played alongside Andriy Shevchenko and other future stars.

He made his professional debut for Borysfen, and later played for such clubs as Chornomorets (Odesa), Volyn (Lutsk), and Metalist (Kharkiv). His performances with Volyn were memorable for the victories over the championship leaders, including Shakhtar and Dynamo.

From 2011 to 2016, Humeniuk was a coach in the Ukraine national under-21 football team, where he assisted Oleksandr Petrakov by working with goalkeepers. Among his students are Bohdan Sarnavskyi and Roman Pidkivka. He has also coached at clubs such as Vorskla, Bukovyna, and Poltava, and in recent years has devoted his time to developing his own football school.

During his playing career, Humeniuk played more than a hundred matches, and his coaching career spanned decades. Among his achievements are the Second League championship (1993/94), a bronze medal in the Ukrainian championship (2006/2007), and two appearances in the semifinals of the National Cup (2002/2003 and 2006/2007).
