Ecuadorian goalkeeper of Barcelona dies after falling in the shower

Ecuadorian goalkeeper Justin Cornejo has died at the age of 20, AFP reports, citing a statement from the team. On July 14, Cornejo was found unconscious in the bathroom.

"No word or sentence can take away the pain we feel at this moment. The memories you leave us all will give us the strength to put this behind us," Barcelona de Guayaquil wrote on social media.

"Barcelona did not explain the cause of death, but some media outlets in the country reported that Cornejo fell while showering, resulting in a serious head injury. The accident occurred on Monday at his home. The footballer was rushed to the intensive care unit of the Panamericana clinic.

The Ecuadorian club itself said on Tuesday morning that the goalkeeper had been hospitalized since Monday and that his condition was critical. However, he died a few hours later. The cause of death was an aortic aneurysm.
