"Dad, I can't wake up Mum". British record holder found dead by her 4-year-old daughter

Famous British swimmer Helen Smart has died suddenly at the age of 42, the NY Post reports. The 1999 world short course vice-champion and 1996 European Junior Championships winner tragically died in her sleep at her home in Wigan.

The cause of death has not been established at the time of publication of this news. According to Helen's mother, the family was on holiday on the shores of Lake Coniston in the Lake District when her 4-year-old daughter found her unconscious in the early hours of the morning. The child went to her father, saying, "Dad, I can't wake Mum up."

Smart's mother said that her daughter had never suffered from any serious illnesses other than a slight swelling in her knee. Helen Smart won four consecutive British championships from 1997 to 2000 and also represented England at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, taking bronze in the 200-metre backstroke.

During the qualifying swims at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Helen set a British record.

After retiring from swimming, she became headteacher of Worsley Mesnes Community Primary School in Wigan, where she continued to work until her death.
