Chile goalkeeper's leg amputated to extract him from car after crash

San Antonio Unido's Chilean goalkeeper Cristobal Campos was involved in a severe car accident in which he lost part of his leg. He was taken to the hospital where doctors tried to restore the limb's ability to function.

San Antonio Unido president Guillermo Lee spoke about the condition of the 25-year-old Chile national team player.

"The first information I heard was that Cristobal had his leg amputated so he could be taken out of the car. It was terrible," Lee was quoted as saying by latercera.com.

A few hours earlier, doctor Jorge Ibáñez had reported that the goalkeeper had suffered a "complex serious injury". He said Campos had suffered a traumatic amputation of his right foot, but only partially because "there were some fragments that attached the limb to the rest of the body."

Ibáñez added that "thanks to the skill of the surgeons, it was possible to reconstruct the limb, restoring blood flow and sensitivity."

The doctor refused to give any prognosis, specifying that the situation could change over time. "Due to the severity of the injury, the long-term viability of the damaged leg cannot be guaranteed, and we can only count on reconstruction," he emphasized.
