Best tennis player of Belarus made an unexpected confession about Lukashenko and faced a response
The best tennis player in Belarus, Arina Sobolenko, has defended herself for the photos she took with Alexander Lukashenko, which have recently attracted a lot of criticism. According to the country's No. 1, it happened at the Federation Cup in Belarus, where the unrecognised president attended the match and wanted to take a photo with the athletes afterwards.
In addition, Sobolenko, who signed a pro-government letter in favour of Lukashenko in 2020, suddenly declared that she did not support the dictator.
"I have said many times that I do not support the war. I don't want my country to be involved in conflicts. You know my position, you know my answer. I don't want to be involved in politics. I just want to be a tennis player. I don't support the war, that is, I don't support Alexander Lukashenko right now," said the 25-year-old from Minsk.
Fans were incredulous at such statements by the world No. 2.
"I don't want to be involved in politics - did you say that directly when you 'supported' her and even after 2020?" - fans wondered.
Others call the tennis player a hypocrite.
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Arina Sobolenko approached the net immediately after her match against Elina Svitolina at Roland Garros and defiantly waited for a handshake from our compatriot.
The Belarusian woman was outraged by this act.
