Lamethe Girma of Ethiopia left the Olympic Games in Paris on a stretcher after a terrible fall during the final of the men's 3000-meter steeplechase. The world record holder in this discipline, jumping the penultimate hurdle, stumbled, hit the track and remained motionless for several minutes.
After the medics got to the victim, they applied a neck brace and took him to the hospital.
A day later, the athlete's team announced on Instagram that Girma "did not suffer from a serious head injury" after a full medical examination.
"He will undergo additional scans to check his leg before he is allowed to leave the hospital," the Elite Running Team said in a statement.
Before his fall, Girma was fighting for a medal in the final.
In the end, Sufian El-Bakkali from Morocco won the race, finishing in 8 minutes 6.05 seconds and 0.36 seconds ahead of American Kenneth Rooks. Abraham Kibibot (Kenya) was third.
