How many Ukrainians consider themselves happy during war: the results of the survey

Against the backdrop of a full-scale war in Ukraine that has lasted almost a year and a half, 70% of citizens consider themselves happy, and 16% feel the opposite. Despite difficulties and real challenges, Ukrainians find ways to adapt to the difficult reality and move forward.

This is proved by the survey, conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology in early June 2023. In general, sociologists asked the opinion of 984 Ukrainians who now live in all regions controlled by the Ukrainian authorities.

It is noted that before the full-scale Russian invasion, in December 2021, 71% of Ukrainians considered themselves happy, and 15% felt unhappy.

According to sociologists, the trend remains that younger (80%) and richer (86%) respondents feel happier, just like then. Geographically, from the west (75%) to the east (69%), the proportion who are happy decreases. Most residents of eastern regions also consider themselves happy people. At the same time, only 54% of IDPs admit that they are happy.

Specialists stressed that other KIIS surveys show a number of negative consequences for Ukrainians as a result of the Russian invasion. In particular, 78 percent say that at least one of their relatives or friends was injured or killed, 64 percent say that their income has decreased, and 29 percent say that they have lost their job. In addition, 64% note deterioration in mental health and 55% note deterioration in physical health.

"Therefore, it is fundamentally important that the indicator of happiness has not changed in general among individual categories of the population. The Ukrainians, despite the sea of difficulties and current challenges, find ways to adapt to the difficult reality and move forward,"  the executive director of KIIS Anton Grushetsky explained the results of the survey.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, the survey showed that some Ukrainians are ready to join the ranks of the AFU, if the military situation escalates around their cities. The majority of such people are in Zhytomyr, Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne and Cherkasy with 17% each, as well as in Vinnytsia, Poltava and Khmelnytskyi wtith 16% each.
