An earthquake struck Romania near the Ukrainian border: what is known and what is the danger for Odesa region

On Friday morning, a moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 occurred in the Romanian Vrancea Zone. The tremors were recorded at 6:19 a.m. Kyiv time at a depth of 104 km.

This was reported by the National Research Institute of Earth Physics (INCDFP). The tremors were also felt by residents of the Odesa region, according to local media reports, although it is not specified in which settlements.

There is no information on destruction or damage. It should be noted that the nearest city to the Vrancea Zone in Ukraine is Reni, located about 100 km away.

Seismologist Oleksandr Kendzera previously noted that an earthquake of this magnitude is not capable of causing significant damage, but it can scare people. However, the threat of repeated powerful earthquakes in Ukraine remains real.

He noted that due to its proximity to the Vrancea Zone, it is necessary to be prepared for possible earthquakes. The map of the general seismic zoning of Ukraine can help with this, which clearly shows that the maximum intensity of earthquakes from the Vrancea Zone in Ukraine can reach 7 points.

"Similar shaking can occur on the third category soils in the southwest of Odesa region," said Kendzera.

He emphasized that to minimize the effects of earthquakes, it is necessary to build earthquake-resistant buildings in hazardous regions, and seismic zoning documentation must be taken into account during design and construction.

On September 16, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale struck Romania. It was felt in the neighboring countries of Bulgaria, Moldova, and Ukraine, including Odesa.
