Constantinople ready to discuss the establishment of common Easter date with Vatican - Patriarch Bartholomew
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew spoke out on a possible agreement on a common Easter date for Rome and Constantinople. He stated that the Ecumenical Patriarchate is ready to duscuss this issue.
Bartholomew said this in his speech at the Palace of Europe on the opening day of the PACE winter session in Strasbourg, Ukrinform reports. According to him, recent exchanges between the churches of Rome and Constantinople have led to closer church relations.
The Ecumenical Patriarchate, Bartholomew noted, is equally committed to promoting Christian unity not only through theological dialogue but also through lively discussions about the common date of Easter.
"We believe that the historical anniversary of Nicaea (Pope Francis is to make a pilgrimage to Nicaea in May - Ed.) should inspire fresh theological conversation as well as renewed Christian cooperation," the Patriarch said.
He added that churches and religious communities play a key role not only in the personal or spiritual life of people, but also in mobilizing institutions and societies at various levels.
As you know, believers of the Western rite (Catholics and Protestants) and the Eastern rite (Orthodox and Greek Catholics) celebrate the Resurrection of Christ on different dates. This year, however, the date of Catholic and Orthodox Easter will coincide, and the entire Christian world will celebrate the holiday on April 20.
