A new virus has broken out in China: it can cause an epidemic
The number of cases of HMPV, a respiratory illness with flu-like symptoms, is on the rise in China. Photos and videos of overcrowded hospitals appear on social media. The media in Indonesia, India, and Japan have already warned their citizens to monitor the situation and take the necessary measures.
This was reported by NDTV. The sudden outbreak reminds people of a similar case with COVID-19. However, Beijing has downplayed the events of the past few days and said it is an annual winter phenomenon. Despite the warnings of international reports, China assures that it is safe to travel in the country.
"Diseases seem to be less serious and spreading on a smaller scale compared to the previous year," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning. She also urged citizens and tourists to follow the guidelines issued by the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention of China.
"I can assure you that the Chinese government cares about the health of Chinese citizens and foreigners coming to China," she added.
The publication reported that HMPV is a respiratory virus that causes infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract. Flu-like symptoms can occur, which can lead to serious respiratory problems. It is especially dangerous for children and vulnerable groups.
HMPV is spread through the air or touch and leads to cough, fever, sore throat, and congestion. Complications may also occur, such as bronchitis or pneumonia.
Earlier, OBOZ.UA reported that in the Australian state of Queensland, scientists lost hundreds of vials of deadly viruses. They disappeared in 2021, but investigators confirmed the leak only in August 2023.
