Unequivocal position: Stefanishina told which countries are more supportive of Ukraine's invitation to NATO
The biggest supporters of Ukraine's invitation to join the North Atlantic Alliance(NATO) are the Central-Eastern European allies and several key EU states. Invitations to join NATO are already supported by all countries on its eastern flank with the argument that their security depends on it.
This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishina. She gave an interview to "European Pravda" (to see the video, scroll to the end of the news).
To a clarifying question about whether Hungary was a part of the countries she mentioned, she said that she was talking about the position of the entire Bucharest Nine. In particular, she recalled that on June 6 her summit was held with the participation of the Secretary General, in which the President of Hungary took part, and the decisions were officially signed, including by the Hungarian side.
"Here it must be understood that Ukraine's membership in NATO is being promoted not so much in the interests of Kyiv, but in the interests of the security of the eastern flank. Of course, Hungary, as a NATO member, retains the right to oppose at any stage, but I do not have the feeling that this can be "black swan" that will block processes," Stefanishina believes.
According to her, there are adherents of Ukraine in the Alliance in Western and Northern Europe. Among these is France, whose President Emmanuel Macron supports Ukraine's membership in NATO and advocates that the Ukraine-NATO Council created be a "bridge" for this.
"And this is more than just support for Ukraine: France is the leader of the initiative for the strategic autonomy of Europe, and Macron really believes that a decision on Ukraine should be made in NATO now," the politician added.
"Obvious and unequivocal" she also called the position of Italy. The countries of Northern Europe, in particular, Denmark and Norway, also act as "the only flank" in support of Ukraine's invitation.
At the same time, the Deputy Prime Minister did not give a direct answer to the question of whether the position of US President Joe Biden is really the main obstacle in this process.
"It's no secret that the role of the United States has always been a key one. It is the same now, in negotiations with Turkey on Sweden's membership in NATO, and in Bucharest, when the States insisted that Ukraine receive an action plan for NATO membership, while Europe was against But now the situation is diametrically different. Now, not the United States, but Europe demands that Ukraine be in NATO," Stefanishina summed up.
As reported by OBOZREVATEL, six retired NATO generals called on the leaders of the Alliance summit in Vilnius to open for Ukraine a concrete path to membership. In particular, "in the near future," because it is necessary to guarantee peace throughout Europe.
