Ukraine will soon begin negotiations on a bilateral security agreement with Ireland. On Wednesday, a meeting was held with a delegation from the Irish Ministry of Foreign Affairs led by Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sonja Hyland.

During the meeting, the parties discussed Ireland's potential readiness to start negotiations on security guarantees. This was reported by Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Ihor Zhovkva in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

He noted that the signing of a security assurance agreement with Ireland would be an excellent example, particularly because Ireland immediately joined the relevant G7 declaration of July 12, 2023.

"Again, it is a neutral country. What security guarantees can it provide? However, security guarantees are not just about weapons. It's also about the economy, about sanctions, about keeping Russian assets working, about establishing a tribunal to punish the aggressor for the crime of aggression, and so on. Ukraine invites other countries that declare or have such a neutral status, such as Austria or Malta, to join the G7 declaration and have appropriate agreements with Ukraine," Zhovkva said.

According to him, active work in this regard is underway with the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Romania and Poland, and agreements with Estonia and Lithuania are ready to be signed.

Zhovkva also said that Ukraine has held the final round of talks with Poland on signing a bilateral security agreement. This is expected to take place before the NATO summit, which will be held on July 9-11 in Washington.

Ukraine and Poland will conclude the agreement as part of the implementation of the G7 Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine, adopted on July 12 last year. So far, our country has signed 17 bilateral security agreements.

As reported, the security agreement between the European Union and Ukraine will be signed in the coming days. In particular, it is expected to happen on June 26. The parties have already agreed on the text of the agreement after several months of negotiations.
