Ukraine has done its homework to allow it to make a decision on joining the EU

Ukraine has carried out the necessary reforms to enable it to decide on the next steps in the process of joining the European Union. Laws have been adopted, in particular, related to the rule of law, countering the influence of oligarchs and fighting corruption.

Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna wrote about this on Twitter following a conversation with Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib. She thanked Belgium for its "firm support of Ukraine's path to the European Union."

"We discussed the agenda of the upcoming EU meetings. Ukraine has done its homework to make decisions on the next steps in the accession process," Stefanishyna said.

In her turn, the Belgian official noted that Ukraine is steadily progressing on its way to European integration despite the war.

"This dynamic needs to be maintained in cooperation with civil society and European institutions," Lahbib said.

As previously reported, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggests that the framework conditions for accession negotiations with Ukraine will not be ready before the European elections. However, in her opinion, the preparation will be completed in early summer.

Preliminary forecasts suggest that negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union could begin as early as March 2024. At the same time, the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, emphasized that if both sides complete their "homework" in time, Ukraine will be able to become an EU member by 2030.
